About RDAP vs WHOIS

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern, JSON-based replacement for the 40-year-old WHOIS protocol. It returns structured data instead of free-form text, supports authentication, and is the canonical source for most TLDs as of 2025.

Since GDPR took effect, registrant contact details for most domains are redacted by default. You'll typically see the registrar's name but not the actual owner. Some TLDs (especially country-code ones like .pk) don't yet expose RDAP and may return no result — you'd need to query their legacy WHOIS server directly for those.
